Themes

The main theme of the Africa Rice Congress 2013 is: ‘Rice Science for Food Security through Smallholder and Agri-business Development in Africa’.

Sub-themes are as follows:

Theme 1

Climate resilient rice for Africa’s environments and markets

Theme 2

Sustainable intensification and diversification of rice based systems

Theme 3

Rice processing and marketing

Theme 4

Rice policy for food security through smallholder and agri-business development

Theme 5

Innovation systems and ICT tools for rice value chain development

Spaces

The Congress will provide space for extensive dialog among participants:

  • Plenary sessions will allow experts and practitioners within each theme to share their knowledge through keynote papers and panel discussions.
     

  • Mini symposia will be organized for each theme to gather scientific evidence as well as highlight investment opportunities. Recommendations will be included in a Congress declaration that will be submitted to the AfricaRice Council of Ministers.
     

  •  A Cameroon/CEMAC* day will be organized by the Host Country to showcase rice science and development in Cameroon and in central Africa in general
     

  • On 25 October, directly after the closure of the Africa Rice Congress, the 2013 Global Forum of the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP), a CGIAR Research Program on rice will be held to report on achievements in rice science world-wide.
