Mr. Getachew Engida is Director and the Comptroller at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France, where he is responsible for the financial management of the organizationís funds and for its internal financial control systems. Before joining UNESCO in mid-2004, he was Director of Finance, Human Resources and Administration at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya. He also served as Assistant Controller at the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Rome, Italy.
Prior to joining the international development sector, Getachew worked as a Corporate Finance Manager at Thomson-Reuters in London and Nairobi for 10 years and worked for Ernst & Young as an auditor in the City of London.
Getachew qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1984 and became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales in 1995. He holds an MBA from City University Business School, London, with a specialization in International Banking and Finance and a BA in Economics from the University of Manchester, England.
He joined AfricaRice as Board member in March 2007 and was elected to the position of AfricaRice Board Chair a year later. He brings to AfricaRice considerable experience in governance and management and understanding of the CGIAR having worked at ILRI and having participated in the External Program Management Reviews of many CGIAR Centers.
Getachew carries British and Ethiopian nationalities. He also serves on the IWMI Board.
